The action of the novel "Thirst" takes place in the first half of the 15th century, when Rus' suffered not only from the raids of Kazan troops, but also from princely feuds. Young nobleman Bunko dreams of defending his homeland under the leadership of a worthy ruler. But his cherished ideals are shattered when he witnesses the cruelty, injustice, cowardice, treachery, and lies of many princes. He must navigate dangerous and treacherous paths amidst conspiracies, betrayals, battles, and defeats, encounter love and almost lose it, in order to finally find the main truth that will help him overcome despair, find the meaning of his life, and happiness... The novel "By the Power" is dedicated to the fates of two women at the beginning of the 16th century: the first wife of Grand Prince Vasily III, Solomonia Saburova, whom he ordered to forcibly become a nun, and his second wife - the young beauty Elena Glinskaya. Did Solomonia really give birth to a son in the monastery, whom many years later the son of Elena, Ivan the Terrible, feared? What role did the boyar Ivan Ovchina play in Elena's fate and in history? Why did Elena die so young, leaving her sons as orphans? Were all those executed by her truly guilty of conspiracies? The author-historian provides a unique version of answers to these and many other mysteries of that fateful time, which determined Russia's paths for many years to come. The novel "By the Power" was published in 1993 in the journal of the Moscow Writers' Organization "Moskovsky Vestnik" (1993, No. 5-6). This edition is corrected and supplemented by the author.
