Nadezhda Alexandrovna Lokhvitskaya, the "queen of laughter", known to readers under the name Taffy, is a prominent figure in Russian literature of the first half of the 20th century, the author of brilliant humorous stories, immediately beloved by both ordinary readers and critics. "She is considered the most entertaining and 'funny' writer. And on a long journey, her collection of stories is always taken..." - wrote Mikhail Zoshchenko. Taffy's works, in which harmless laughter and subtle irony are sometimes combined with poignant sadness and compassion for her characters, were highly valued by contemporaries: Alexander Kuprin and Ivan Bunin, Mark Aldanov and Sasha Cherny. Extraordinarily popular in her homeland, and later in the emigrant community, Taffy returned to Russian readers in the early 1990s. And since then, collections of her stories and memoirs have been released one after another. This edition presents well-known Taffy stories written at different stages of her life, among which are such little masterpieces as "Lieutenant Kasper", "Katinka", "Behind the Wall", "Demonic Woman", and many others.
