Next to the colonial town of Essenwald lies Vorrh, a huge — possibly infinite — forest. This is a place of angels and demons, warriors and priests. Intelligent and magical, Vorrh can distort time and erase memory. Legends say that the Garden of Eden still exists at its heart. And now a former English soldier wants to become the first person to cross Vorrh from end to end. Armed only with a strange bow, made from the bones and sinews of his deceased beloved, he begins his journey, but someone fears its consequences and hires a native archer to stop the wanderer. Against this backdrop unfold the stories of a cyclops raised by strange robots, a young girl whose curiosity fatally changed her life, and historical figures like the French writer Raymond Roussel and the photographer Eadweard Muybridge. Fact and fiction blend together, hunters turn into victims, and the fate of each depends only on the mysterious will of Vorrh.
