Patrick Smith considers the ideological dilemma of modern America. Americans have many national myths about the purpose of their chosen nation and its mission they are still. However, there is a undoubted dissonance between these myths and the real historically established and far from the Forest manner of America. Today, the Americans were in front of the choice between the blind commitment to their myth and the rethinking of their own way and role in the world, which is necessary, in the opinion of the author, if they want to find their place in the 21st century.
Smith considers the history of the difficult relationship of America with history: the Spanish-American War, the Cold War and the influence of the fear and the feeling of their own power on the psyche of Americans, the uneasy years that followed on September 11th. The author has its own view on the events of American history and the most important tasks that America should solve today, sober and critical, but not deprived of optimism
