The reports read at the conference, and the Round Table materials are devoted not to the history of the real book, but the history of ideas about it, developed in theoretical and artistic consciousness from the Renaissance before the XX century. In other words, it is not about the structure, but about the functions of the book in culture. Among the problems considered in the collection - authorship and property for text, forms of literary controversy in the era of typography, book censorship, the formation of private libraries, competition between the book and newspaper, finally the image of the book in the works of a number of French writers, from Charles Nodier to Valerie.
