Selma Ottilia Lovisa Lagerlöf (1858-1940) is a world-renowned Swedish writer, the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. The story "The Wonderful Adventures of Nils with the Wild Geese" was originally conceived as a geography textbook for elementary school, but turned into a fairy tale that children all over the world enjoy. To create it, the writer studied numerous folk tales, familiarized herself with the works of Swedish scientists in botany, zoology, geology, cartography, architecture, and history, and also traveled throughout the country. This edition presents a free retelling by Z. Zadunaiskaya and A. Lyubarskaya, which does not include detailed geographical and ethnographic descriptions, but retains the magical story of the main character Nils' coming of age. A disagreeable, quarrelsome, and cruel boy, after facing many trials, learns to befriend others, help the weak, and becomes more honest and kind. The story of his miraculous transformation shows that it is up to the individual to shape their own life. A free retelling by Z. M. Zadunaiskaya and A. I. Matveeva. For middle school age.
