"The Embankment of the Incurables" is one of the most famous essays by Joseph Brodsky, written in 1989 in English. This autobiographical work is dedicated to Venice, the poet's impressions of the city, encounters with it - both imaginary and real. According to Lev Losev, in both English and Russian, it "reads as a poetic text par excellence." On modern maps of Venice, the Embankment of the Incurables does not exist, but at the beginning of the 17th century, this name was given to the place where a hospital for plague patients was located. This is part of the modern Zattere promenade, where even today you can see plaques reminding of the hundreds of thousands of epidemic victims: "Zattere, formerly of the Incurables." John Updike wrote: "The essay 'The Embankment of the Incurables' is an attempt to turn a point on the globe into a window into the world of universal experiences, the private experience of a chronic Venetian tourist - into a crystal, whose facets would reflect the fullness of life... The main source of light emanating from these facets is pure beauty." In the current edition, the essay is published in two languages - Russian and English (translated by Grigory Dashevsky).
