In his book, the author seeks to trace the evolution of attitudes towards Stalinism in post-Soviet cinema. Initially, filmmakers only resurrected the 'demonic' attributes of Stalin, with which he was endowed even during his lifetime. By the mid-2000s, the construction of a new myth emerged, within which the Stalinist era was depicted as both tragic and heroic, portraying people displaying their best qualities and being exceptionally human, while the tragic aspects were overshadowed. As a result, an ironic distance towards Stalinism was established, relics of this era are now integrated into the context of mass culture. Art-house cinema took a different path: instead of attempting to reconstruct history, it began to search for special expressive means to represent the process of memory itself.
