The history of sea adventures is filled not only with geographical discoveries but also with tragedies when ships sank, and the crew was mourned in absentia, for the sea became their grave. Yet, the return 'from the other world' of those who, after a shipwreck, miraculously managed to reach an uninhabited patch of land and survived through hard work and hope, was all the more astonishing. Regardless of nationality, era, and biography, they are all called by one name - Robinsons. Many know about the life of Robinson Crusoe. But few know that Daniel Defoe described a story that was actually real. … On February 1, 1709, a ship of English pirates anchored near the uninhabited island of Juan Fernandez, lost in the midst of the Pacific Ocean. The crew noticed a fire on the shore. The next day, a part of the team, sent to the shore in a boat, finds 'a man dressed in goat skins and seeming more wild than their first owners'. This was Alexander Selkirk - a Scottish sailor, left on the island four years ago, he barely remembers his native language to tell Captain Woodes Rogers how he managed to survive. Charles Buffe, author of the book 'The Truth about Robinson and Friday', fascinated by the story of the 'real' Robinson, found and translated the original accounts of witnesses of that time: Woodes Rogers, William Funnell, John Welbe, Basil Ringrose, and William Dampier. He comments on them to better understand the incredible experience of the sailor Alexander Selkirk, which became one of the most powerful and vivid stories for centuries thanks to the pen of Daniel Defoe.
