In 1914, Europe stands on the brink of the First World War. Engineer Richard Hannay returns from Africa to old good England, where he leads a quiet bachelor life. One day, a neighbor of Richard asks for his help, claiming that he is in mortal danger because he stumbled upon the trail of a spy organization planning to steal British military secrets. Bored Richard agrees to help the stranger and unwittingly gets involved in spy games. Soon, Richard is pursued not only by foreign agents but also by the police - for a murder he did not commit. Now the fate of the country depends on whether he can decipher the secret code and expose the enemy's cunning plan. The work is written in the genre of a spy thriller and has been adapted into film four times, including by the famous Alfred Hitchcock. The book also includes three stories by John Buchan.
