Arkady Petrovich Gaidar (real surname Golikov) (1904-1941) was a Russian writer, war journalist, and a classic of Soviet children's literature. Gaidar began his writing career after being discharged from the army. According to his contemporaries, Arkady composed his works "on the go": he would think up stories on the road and then write them down in simple notebooks.
'The Tale of the Military Secret, of Malchish-Kibalchish and His Firm Word' (1933) is a story about a brave boy whose father and older brother went to war against the bourgeoisie. The courageous Malchish was not afraid to resist the enemies and rally other kids to fight against evil. The strong-spirited hero of the tale became an example for millions of Soviet children. The book also includes stories like 'The Blue Cup', 'Smoke in the Forest', 'The Hot Stone', 'At the Crossing', 'The Fourth Bunker', 'Conscience', 'Campaign', and others.
Suitable for middle school age.
