The book presents the results of a comparative analysis of the texts of the "Sutra of the White Old Man" in "clear script" from three main regions where the Oirats currently reside - Russia, Mongolia, and China. The White Old Man is a deity that has long been revered in Central Asia and the Far East and is included in the Buddhist pantheon as a protector of the Teachings. His cult is most popular among the Western Mongols, Oirats, and Kalmyks. The corpus of ritual texts that has developed around the cult of the White Old Man among the Mongolian peoples includes poetic prayers (sang) and a prose text known by the brief title "Sutra of the White Old Man." The publication will be of interest not only to researchers of the Oirat language, literature, and culture but also to readers who wish to familiarize themselves with the traditions and beliefs of Buddhists in Russia.
