1474. A young English knight, Leo Thornville, on the orders of his uncle, an enterprising abbot, participates in a trade trip to Cyprus—to purchase wine and fabrics. However, the times are such that the trade trip resembles a military enterprise and is no less dangerous than participating in military actions. The ship on which Leo sails becomes the prey of Turkish pirates, and they resell their captive to other Turks. Thus begins the forced journey of young Leo across the expanses of the Ottoman Empire, where he will have to move stones on construction sites, learn the Turkish language and customs.
