The monograph is dedicated to the study of article forms of the noun in English as a system for expressing a special morphological category of this part of speech. A whole range of approaches is used to establish and define the functions performed by articles, among which the cognitive approach occupies a central place, linking the existence of articles with the process of cognition, namely with the categorization of the English-speaking world. The main goal of the monograph is to consider the article forms of nouns in English as a polyfunctional phenomenon. To substantiate this position and to identify the various functions of articles, a distinction is made between collective categorization, which conditions the normative (grammatical) use of article forms, and subjective categorization, which facilitates individual use of them for the purposes of enhancement and creating a certain effect. The normative and individual functioning of the article + noun structure is confirmed by extensive material, presented by artistic and journalistic discourses.
The monograph is intended for linguists of a wide profile, specialists in cognitive linguistics, English grammar, stylistics, foreign language teachers, graduate students, and students.
