Vladislav Mikhailovich Glinka was a writer and historian who served for many years as the chief curator of the Department of the History of Russian Culture at the State Hermitage Museum and had an excellent knowledge of the past. Glinka's remarkable works about people from the late 18th to early 19th centuries are examples of precision in everything related to the details of historical events and the long-gone way of life of that time. The duology covers events in Russia from 1818 to 1837 and is dedicated to the fate of a real person, a participant in the Patriotic War of 1812, Alexander Ivanov. Alexander Ivanov, a cavalryman taken as a recruit from a village near Tula, who endured years of harsh training and took part in suppressing the Decembrist uprising on Senate Square, set the goal of his life to buy out his family from serfdom. In the pages of the book, we see not only the hero's comrades but also well-known historical figures such as Nicholas I, Vasily Zhukovsky, Alexander Pushkin, Alexander Griboyedov, Kondraty Ryleyev, and Wilhelm Küchelbecker. The novels "The Story of Unter Ivanov" and "The Fate of the Palace Grenadier" present a vivid and authentic picture of the social structure of Tsarist Russia.
