As the author of this book writes, 'every story has its own backstory'. In 1985, Daniel Pennac wandered into a bookstore where he saw an album with sketches from a dog's life and was so impressed that he sent his book 'Dog Pooch' to the author of the album. This sparked a years-long correspondence between Pennac and Gabrielle Vincent - a Belgian artist who created the legendary picture books about the bear Ernest and the mouse Celestine.
Vincent's albums inspired Pennac to create a screenplay for an animated film, which was nominated for an Oscar and won a Cesar award. Following the film, in 2012, the book you are holding in your hands was published - 'The Story of Ernest and Celestine'. It is a true novel with a poignant social agenda: about glaring inequality in society and the possibility of finding a kindred spirit despite prohibitions and prejudices.
For preschool and early school age children.
