The classical philologist and cultural theorist Olga Mikhailovna Freidenberg (1890–1955) left a huge corpus of autobiographical "notes," which have not been published to this day. The story of a life that coincided with revolution, two world wars, and terror is a domestic chronicle written by a researcher who seeks to understand and explain to future readers the form of governance under which she had to live. Irina Paperno set herself the task not only to create a guide to the pages of the chronicle but also to reconstruct the political theory of Stalinism, which O. M. Freidenberg consistently (though not always explicitly) developed in her "Notes" - a theory comparable to what Hannah Arendt created in a different form. The book is addressed not only to scholars in the humanities but also to a wide readership reflecting on how people live when power penetrates "into the very heart of a person, suffocating and pursuing them everywhere, even in solitude, even at night, even in their deep 'self'." Irina Paperno is a philologist, cultural historian, and professor at the University of California, Berkeley.
