The history of art of the Ancient World presents the most complex task for science: from distant centuries that saw the rise and fall of entire civilizations, only fragmentary evidence has reached us - written sources, mostly preserved in fragments, miraculously surviving artifacts. Based on these precious fragments, literary historians, painters, and architects reconstruct the image of vanished cultures, but there is nothing similar for music historians. For eras when there were no records or tape recorders, and musical notation was taking its first tentative steps, the only sources for studying musical art are texts - musicological treatises and recorded 'reviews' of listeners. The modern history of ancient music is entirely based on these literary monuments, but do we have reasons to unquestionably trust the dating of ancient manuscripts and the names of their creators? The question, without which no science can do, forms the basis of this research undertaken by Evgeny Hertzman.
