The monograph explores the phenomenon of multilingualism - the existence and functioning of subsystems of the Russian national language, functional varieties of literary language, sublanguages of different social and professional groups, as well as sublanguages of individual personalities. A theoretical interpretation of multilingualism is proposed in relation to the categories of communicative tolerance and collective identity. The features of the formal representation and functions of multilingualism in sociocultural communicative practices and in the individual practice of a particular language personality are described based on the material of language existence. A special section of the monograph is dedicated to the analysis of the position of the Russian language in the countries of near and far abroad.
