The Volga River and the vast Volga region served as the basis for a whole cycle of artistic works by Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko (1853-1921). Having lived in Nizhny Novgorod for over ten years, Korolenko walked and traveled through the forests of the Trans-Volga region, the banks of the Vetluga River, studied and described the life of the craftspeople and Old Believers of Kershen, merchants and townspeople in small remote towns, Great Russian peasants, and representatives of the peoples of the Volga region. The writer called the Volga the "cradle of Russian romanticism," its banks remembering the campaigns of Razin and Pugachev. Reflections on the past, present, and future of the Russian people can be heard in the stories "During the Eclipse" (1887), "Birds of the Sky" (1889), "The River Plays" (1891), "On the Volga" (1892), "On a Cloudy Day" (1896), and "The Artist Alymov" (1896). The Nizhny Novgorod decade (1885-1895) was one of the most significant periods in the writer's work, after which he became known throughout Russia.
