The five-volume work of an outstanding Italian historian and a publicist, first published in 1902-1907, is devoted to civil wars in Rome, who led to the fall of the republic and approval of the new imperial regime of principal. The presentation includes the prehistory - the time of formation and growth of the Roman power, the period of civil wars (30s. I century BC) and summed up under him the feature of the rule of the emperor Augustus (30 g. BC - 14 AD) The narrative is distinguished by intense drama, saturated with ideas and comparisons, sometimes very paradoxical, replete with brilliant portrait characteristics (Sulla, Pompey, Crassa, Lukulla, Caesar, Cicero, Oktaviana August) The book was transferred to all the most important European languages, the Russian translation prepared by the prominent researcher of Antiquity A.A. Zakharov was published between 1914 and 1925. The new edition of this translation was prepared under the scientific edition of the doctor of historical sciences, Professor E.D. Frolova
