For the first time in Russian, an interesting historical source of the period of the thirty -year war (1618–1648), belonging to the focus of the outstanding French military engineer, Cavalier Antoine de Villa (c. 1596 - c. 1656/57), is published and in detail considering the theory and practice of fortification of the new time, issues of political and economic management of the fortified city, the organization of the garrison service, as well as the strategy and tactics of the siege war. A contemporary and associate of the famous Cardinal Richelieu, Antoine de Vill took part in many military campaigns and sieges of his time, made a major contribution to the development of fortification science and military engineering thought in general, and some aspects of his literary and scientific heritage (for example, a treatise on Malaya War) has retained a certain relevance to the present day.
