During the Great Patriotic War and the Soviet-Japanese War, the highest body of state power in the USSR - the State Defense Committee - directed the active army and the Armed Forces as a whole through the Supreme High Command Headquarters. Established on the second day of the war, the Headquarters fully justified itself as a body of strategic leadership for the Red Army troops and the Naval Forces, carrying out a vast range of tasks from developing plans for military campaigns and major operations to managing troops and summarizing the war experience. Specific political and military figures stood behind its multifaceted activities. At various stages of the war, 11 individuals were part of the Supreme High Command Headquarters. This book describes the contribution of each of them to ensuring the Great Victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany and militaristic Japan.
