For the first time in paperback: the last novel by Erich Maria Remarque - a legacy! It remained a fragment yet continues to fascinate: The novel 'The Promised Land', on which Remarque worked until his death in September 1970, offers a vivid picture of New York in the forties, the world metropolis, art city, and emigrant hub. Ludwig Sommer has made it: as a German refugee, he escaped the Nazi regime and arrived in New York through detours with a Jewish passport. He connects with the emigrant scene and finds employment with an art dealer. In a short time, the city's social life is open to him, he moves between lavish parties, expensive restaurants, and exclusive apartments - yet he cannot regain carefreeness. Memories of the escape haunt him, of the months in hiding under a Belgian museum and the captivity in a German concentration camp, where he witnessed the murder of his father. While becoming more successful due to his art knowledge and business acumen, he is tormented by the question of whether a life in the face of the Holocaust is morally justifiable. The news of the liberation of Paris raises hope for a return and the prospect of revenge, but when shortly after Jessie Stein, a selfless supporter of the emigrants, falls seriously ill, Sommer decides to stay. And then the opportunity arises to follow his beloved Maria Fiola to Hollywood. The ending remains open, several sketches by Remarque are preserved, but the afterword by Tilmann Westphalen provides insight into the genesis and possible ending.
