Oscar Wilde - an outstanding English writer, who was called the apostle of aestheticism during his lifetime. He loved and exalted beauty - in art, in pleasures, and in youth. He, like no one else, was able to embody beauty in the artistic word, which made his works a unique phenomenon in literature. 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' - Wilde's most famous work - immediately upon its release (1890) gained scandalous fame, provoked controversial assessments from contemporaries, and soon became a literary manifesto of European aestheticism.
...From the perfect beauty of Dorian Gray, everyone around is crazy: the artist Basil Hallward painted his portrait, women hang on his neck. How can one not fall under the influence of Sir Henry Wotton? This cynic and aesthete becomes Dorian's 'demon' and helps him overcome the torments of conscience, after which Dorian ceases to distinguish between good and evil. He abandons the girl who loves him and drives her to death, and then his life is a series of endless villainies and crimes. Only the portrait reminds him that none of his misdeeds will go unpunished. The face of the living Dorian remains beautiful - he is doomed to eternal youth. But the face on the portrait becomes more and more disfigured with each new act of evil.
