The book presents new images and identity of Russia, in the creation of which V.A. Tishkova, for more than two decades heading the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and, rightfully recognized as the leader of Russian ethnologists and anthropologists.
Essays written by the authors not only according to the plan of scientific work, but also according to the call of the heart, allow us to trace how the images of Russia changed dramatically, corresponding with its former and, especially, Soviet history.
The first section reveals the dramatic problems of the formation of imaginary and real identities, the movement of the Russian idea from messianism to pragmatism, the ratio of categories of "Russian civilization" and "polyetonalism", and forming the conditions and directions of the formation of the civil nation. The second section focuses the attention of readers on positive and negative trends that affect nation -crossing and modern ethnocultural processes in various social environments and ethnic formations. The essays of the third section presents the historical, ethno -political and social aspects of the development of Russia"s images and identities, the experience and key issues of studying specific situations in time, space and answers to the challenges of modernization and globalization are revealed
