Gaston Leroux (1868-1927) began publishing his first novel in a newspaper, being a well-known journalist and reporter who had traveled to Spain, Morocco, and even covered the Russian revolution of 1905. Leroux became a recognized master of detective fiction, creating the detective Joseph Rouletabille, who rivaled Sherlock Holmes, and even founded a film company. The novels of the French writer (especially 'The Mystery of the Yellow Room') fascinated surrealists, and admirers of his work included Sergei Eisenstein and Jorge Luis Borges. Mysterious events take place at the Paris Opera House: sets collapse, people die. Rumors circulate that all this is the work of the mysterious Phantom... Based on the novel, the famous Broadway musical 'The Phantom of the Opera' by Andrew Lloyd Webber was produced.
