The book is dedicated to the paradoxical era of the relationship between the Vainakhs and the Soviet state. The study opens up with a description of utopian attempts by communist power to realize the old imperial dream: to evict the "restless" Chechens and Ingush outside the North Caucasus, to populate the liberated territories with more "calm" peoples, and in places of special settlements to create a new “enlightened”, an atomized ethnos controlled by the NKVD. The book ends with the history of the Return of the Vainakhs to the Caucasus in the 1950s, by considering the sociocultural problems of the restoration of the Chechen-Ingush autonomy
