The work of John Armstrong, the famous Soviet and the Ukrainist, is a documented history of Ukrainian nationalism of the Second World War. The author presented in detail a variety of social elements of the nationalist movement, traced the struggle within its groups and the activities of their leaders in the political atmosphere of those years. He subjured a deep analysis of the nature of this phenomenon, the spread of it in various parts of Ukraine, the features of manifestation during the German occupation and sources of survivability, and also showed how it was transformed under the influence of the medium in which it originates. He touched upon the extreme forms of nationalism - aggression and atrocities in relation to civilians in a pursuit of racial purity.
