The book offered to the reader by the German ethnographer and art historian Ernst Grosse is dedicated to the question of the origin of art. The author thoroughly explores various aspects of the artistic life of primitive peoples: sculpture and painting, music, dance, poetry, ornamentation, and body decoration by ancient people. He concludes that the forms of primitive art are subject to the same laws that govern higher artistic creations, and also clarifies that artistic activity at lower levels of culture exists in the same forms as at higher levels (the only exception being architecture, the development of which, according to the author, was hindered by the nomadic life of hunting tribes). The main difference Grosse sees between primitive art and civilized art is that a large part of the artistic works of primitive peoples arises not from purely aesthetic aspirations, but often serves some practical purpose; the satisfaction of aesthetic needs in art comes to the fore only at higher levels of civilization.
