The book by Charles G. Addison, a legal scholar and expert on the history of the order, is dedicated to the legendary brotherhood of the Poor Knights of the Temple of Jerusalem. The author tells the story of the emergence of the most powerful military-religious order of that time, the specifics of their statutes, hierarchy, and possessions in the East and the West. Addison recounts the exploits of the Templars in the name of defending the Holy Land, their participation in military campaigns alongside Richard the Lionheart and other Christian kings, the confrontation with Saladin, the siege of Jerusalem, the tragic loss of Acre, the last stronghold of the Templars in the Holy Land, and also sheds light on the trial of the Templars in England. In the final chapters of his book, Charles Addison, a squire of the Inner Temple, describes the main residence of the Templars in England and the magnificent temple of the abbey, as well as narrates the history of the London Temple after the dissolution of the order and the transfer of its possessions to the ownership of legal scholars who restored some of the customs of the Knights of the Temple and revived the traditions of former hospitality.
