The work of the well-known Russian Scandinavian studies scholar and saga expert Tatiana Nikolaevna Jackson is dedicated to the image of the North, which found reflection in the monuments of ancient Scandinavian literature. In the seven chapters of the study, the following topics are sequentially presented: Norway as the "way to the North" reflected in these sources (Chapter 1), its northern tip Finnmark and the lands beyond it, both real and fictional (Chapter 2), the Arctic Ocean and the White Sea (Chapter 3), Bjarmaland and the river Vina (Chapter 4), the places of residence of real (Karelians, Kvens) and mythological (horned Finns, Amazons) inhabitants of the Far North (Chapter 5), Iceland lying deep in the Atlantic Ocean (Chapter 6), and finally Greenland, which was considered by authors of chronicles, geographical works, and sagas as part of that "land bridge" that connected Bjarmaland with the open Scandinavian lands of North America and even Africa, thereby transforming the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans from the surrounding ancient oecumene into an internal sea (Chapter 7). This worldview was a result of Scandinavian authors "pushing back" the boundaries beyond which the realm of the unknown and frightening lay, far to the north and northeast, and "allocating" an uninhabitable space for its inhabitants.
The book will be of interest not only to Scandinavian studies scholars, but also to source researchers, medievalists, cultural studies scholars, folklorists, specialists in historical geography and toponymy, as well as all enthusiasts of antiquity.
