An academic periodical on the history of the Middle Ages and early Modern period in Western Europe, serving as the body of the professional community of Russian medievalists. Founded in 1942 under the auspices of the USSR Academy of Sciences, it has been published annually (by the 'Nauka' Publishing House) without interruption to the present day. Since 2007, it has been published quarterly.
It is included in the list of peer-reviewed publications recommended by the Higher Attestation Commission for the defense of candidate and doctoral dissertations. Currently, the journal publishes original research by domestic and foreign historians, predominantly devoted to the history of Western Europe in the Middle Ages and early Modern period, as well as articles related to adjacent regions or related disciplines.
Significant attention is given to translations of sources, historiographical reviews, and introductions to the life of the main scientific centers of domestic medieval studies. Materials to aid teachers in higher and secondary education, reviews of domestic and foreign publications, and a bibliography of works on the history of Western Europe from the mid-4th to the mid-17th centuries published in Russia are regularly included.
