"Money rules the world" is a statement that is now a slogan of capitalist civilization - a civilization where everything is bought and sold. It is hard to imagine our modern world without crises, stock market reports, and bank bankruptcies. The best economists and world politicians compete to predict the further development of the 21st-century economy. But what if we take a different path and seek solutions by turning to the early steps of modern Europe, to the era of the Middle Ages when Western European civilization originated. At first glance, this step may seem strange - after all, the Middle Ages are often seen as a time of the undisputed dominance of the Christian church, which extolled the ideal of honest poverty and non-acquisitiveness, denying the power of money, symbolized by Christ's expulsion of the merchants from the temple. However, Jacques Le Goff, a prominent French historian of modern times, was able to show us "another Middle Ages" - an era of calculating merchants and bankers, money changers and usurers, kings who manipulated the value of coins to pay off debts, monastic orders that kept precise accounts, and the papacy that entangled medieval Europe in a network of financial obligations. In the pages of this book, the reader will find everything related to money in the Middle Ages: financial management, money circulation in Europe, minting, mints and types of coins, tax systems, the birth of the bill of exchange, price dynamics, and changes in wages. It is surprising how resonant the realities of that time are with our modern world: whether it be colossal investments in the Crusades or the construction of Gothic cathedrals, which slowed the rise of the medieval economy, or the history of the "new" rich - money changers, the first bankers who created their financial empires with the support of growing states. It can be boldly stated that Jacques Le Goff's book is the first textbook on the origins of European economics published in Russian.
