In the book offered to the readers' attention, compiled by the Soviet historian of mathematics G.N. Popov, contains "The Sand Reckoner" — a small arithmetic treatise by the great ancient Greek scientist Archimedes, written in the form of a letter to the scientist Gelon, the ruler of the city of Syracuse. The task that Archimedes sets and solves in the treatise is expressed very simply: to determine the number of sand grains in the space of the Universe. For this purpose, he tries to calculate the size of the Universe, based on the astronomical concepts of that time and at the same time inventing a way of naming very large numbers. G.N. Popov prefaced the translation with his extensive work reviewing the works of Archimedes. The book also contains comments by G.N. Popov, facilitating the understanding of some parts of the treatise.
The book is recommended for mathematicians and historians of science, as well as a wide range of readers interested in mathematics and its history.
