Nikolai Epple is a philologist and translator, a specialist in the history of English literature, and a laureate of the 'Enlightener' award.
The popular science book 'The Magic Country and Its Surroundings' is a collection of essays about English writers of the 19th-21st centuries, whose works are commonly associated with genres such as fairy tales, children's stories, and fantasy novels. However, here these authors are presented to the reader as being part of the tradition of the literature of the Magic Country.
Discussing allusions and reminiscences, revealing connections between artistic fiction and historical and linguistic reality, Epple considers English literature of the 'fairy country' as a conversation among a close-knit group of well-acquainted people. MacDonald, Carroll, Graham, Milne, Chesterton, Williams, Lewis, Tolkien, Pullman, Pratchett, Rowling, Clarke - all of them are familiar in life or through books, learn from each other, 'play' and argue with each other. Thus, MacDonald convinced Carroll to write the story of Alice, Chesterton was one of the most insightful commentators on Carrollian absurdity, and Tolkien was an attentive reader of MacDonald, Milne, Lewis, Pratchett admired 'The Wind in the Willows' by Kenneth Grahame, Rowling loved 'Narnia' in her childhood and considers Tolkien's books one of her most important reading experiences.
These authors possess truly 'elvish craftsmanship' (as Tolkien calls it) to create a Secondary world, permeated with magic and mysteries, from the fragments of Primary reality: historical events, cultural phenomena and language, personal encounters, and literary impressions. Their Fantasy is born of reason, and absurdity is based on logic. Therefore, the so-called 'fairy tales' of English masters are not at all an escape from reality and a path to escapism, but, on the contrary, a way to comprehend the true order of things and to approach Reality.
The publication is adorned with photographs of English writers, illustrations to their works, reproductions of graphics and paintings, manuscripts, and covers of first editions.
