Pavel Dmitrievich Bryantsev taught history for several years at one of the secondary educational institutions and noticed how attentively the students listened to explanations of the sections of Russian history related to Lithuania and its relations with Poland and Russia. Due to the interest in this topic and the lack of necessary sources, Bryantsev decided to write the history of the Lithuanian state himself. He worked on this composition for seven years: he reviewed numerous sources and textbooks, selected only the most important and significant events from them, and combined them into a single comprehensive picture of the history of the Lithuanian state.
