Readers are offered a book by the famous German mathematician and philosopher Paul Du Bois-Reymond (1831-1889), in which the limits of human knowledge in the field of exact sciences are considered. The author describes the goals of natural science and three directions of research in the exact sciences - empirical, mechanical, and metamathematical. Some interesting questions of natural science are analyzed, in particular, the continuous and atomistic filling of space with matter and the action of force at a distance. As an appendix, the book contains works by outstanding scientists: H. Hertz on electric force, H. Helmholtz on Goethe's teachings and his role in the development of scientific ideas in the 19th century, as well as L. Pasteur on the asymmetry of organic compounds and the significance of tartaric acid for the study of the structure of matter. The book is addressed to a wide range of readers interested in the history of science, philosophical problems of natural science, the possibilities and limits of human understanding of nature.
