Every morning could be the last for someone sentenced to death. The feelings, thoughts, memories of the condemned, the depiction of prison life are all found in Victor Hugo's novella "The Last Day of a Condemned Man". The book also includes the last novel "Ninety-Three" by Hugo, which vividly portrays the tumultuous events of the French Revolution. The drama of political events intertwines closely with the tragedy of individual people. The novel features both real historical figures such as Robespierre, Marat, Danton, as well as vividly depicted fictional characters embodying cruelty and mercy, fanatical devotion to political ideals and ordinary human weaknesses, ruthlessness and generosity.
