The Zaporozhian Cossacks called Yosyp Mykhailovych Hladky the peasant general. His odyssey seemed incredible to many: in 1820, when Yosyp, a Cossack peasant from a small Little Russian village, turned thirty, he fled to the Zadunaiska Sich, where just five years later, after participating in the war between the Turks and the Greeks, he became the ataman of a kuren. Two years later, the Zadunaiska Cossacks elected him as their leader, and the Turkish sultan bestowed upon him the title of a two-bunch pasha (general). Soon after, Yosyp Mykhailovych led all the Sich, all the wandering Cossacks who did not want to fight on the side of Turkey against Russia, back to their homeland. Emperor Nicholas I granted him the rank of colonel, and later appointed him as the punitive ataman of the Azov Cossack Host. For his bravery in battles, he was awarded orders and medals of the Russian Empire and eventually became a Russian general. Under the leadership of Yosyp Mykhailovych, three settlements were founded - Pokrovska, Novospasovska, and Petrovska, fifteen hamlets, and the town of Nikolskoye (now Volodarskoye).
