This story by Leo Tolstoy was published in 1889 and immediately subjected to censorship by the tsarist authorities. The book proclaims the ideal of abstinence and describes anger and jealousy from a first-person perspective. The title of the story was inspired by Beethoven's Sonata No. 9 for violin and piano, dedicated to Rodolphe Kreutzer.
