Admiral Gavriil Andreevich Sarychev dedicated over half a century to serving Russia and geographical science. The reports of his expeditions contain materials of meteorological, hydrological, and astronomical observations, information about the nature and population of Eastern Siberia, Kamchatka, the Aleutian and Commander Islands, sketches of the terrain, settlements, bays, and coves. The maps he compiled were so good that many of them were practically unchanged and used in sailing directions for over a hundred years. For many years, Sarychev effectively led the hydrographic service of the Russian Empire, headed the Admiralty Department, and participated in the planning of over thirty expeditions, including the first Russian circumnavigation and the Russian Antarctic expedition. The admiral was also endowed with literary talent, which is why Sarychev is rightfully considered the first domestic maritime writer. Seven geographical objects are named after him, including a cape and strait in the Pacific Ocean, an island in the Chukchi Sea, mountains in Novaya Zemlya, Antarctica, and the Aleutian Islands, as well as an active volcano in the Kuril Islands.
