H.G. Wells (1866-1946) envisioned the future through his works, always emphasizing that scientific achievements detached from humanistic values bring not prosperity, but new disappointments and problems to humanity. The main character of the novel "The Invisible Man" (1897) invents a device and a special formula that make him invisible. However, the scientific breakthrough leads the brilliant scientist to ruin: he is forced to hide his new essence, suffers from cold and hunger, and cannot share the joy of his perfect discovery with anyone. Trying to regain his human form, he only further delves into vice and predictably ends his days as an outcast, turning people against him and being torn apart by a frenzied mob. In a cruel irony by the author, the invisibility acquired by the hero naturally exposes all the worst in his nature.
