The book presents an analysis of the evolution of two trends in the development of Russian public self-consciousness. We are talking about the opposition of the "Ancient" and "New" Russia, which arose in the XVIII century. and due to the problem of "Europeanization" of Russian life. The question of the national identity and preservation of the original culture was actualized during this period, gave rise to the idea of "ancient" Russia as an alternative to the Western model of statehood. The development of the named cultural and ideological opposition for more than a century period is traced on the material of the creative heritage of F.Prokopovich, I.T.Pososhova, M.V. Lomonosov, A.P.Sumokova, KN. M.M.Sherbatova, N.M. Karamzin by analyzing the historical role of N.I. Novikov, Catherine II, A.N.radishchev, Decembrists and accounting for European historiography on this topic.
