Pyotr Pavlovich Ershov (1815-1869) was a Russian poet and prose writer, and a high school teacher. He was born into a civil servant's family in Siberia, in one of the districts of the Tobolsk province. He received his education at the Imperial St. Petersburg University, studying at the historical-philological faculty. It was there, at the age of 19, that Ershov wrote a poetic fairy tale about a magical little horse that could speak like a human. This tale was praised by the professor of Russian literature, Pyotr Pletnyov, who, impressed by the student's talent, began one of his lectures by discussing it and then pointed out the blushing author sitting in the audience. For a long time, it was believed that the first four lines of the tale were written by Alexander Pushkin, to whom Pletnyov, a close friend of the poet, showed "The Little Humpbacked Horse". Later, it was concluded that Pushkin, who warmly received the poem, only made a few edits to it, after which Ershov himself revised it four times. "The Little Humpbacked Horse" is written in a four-foot iambic meter with a paired rhyme scheme. Its folkloric melodiousness, gentle and sharp humor, and remarkable lightness of verse still captivate readers today.
