The XVII century was marked by a continuous series of betrayals, betrayal and diverse of Cossack hetmans and gentry, along with troops to different participants in the conflict. The Cossack Colonel Mazepa, who was elected hetman in 1685, began to acquire more and more importance. He seemed to be able to put the Cossacks in the service of the new empire. However, all this ended monstrous and treacherous treason on the eve of the Battle of Poltava. Mazepa relied on the victory of the Swedish king. This fatal mistake had dramatic consequences for the entire Dnieper Cossacks
