Readers are presented with a book by the English historian and public figure W.E.H. Lecky (1838--1903), dedicated to the study of the emergence and influence of rationalism. The author aims to present the history of the spirit of rationalism, which he understands not as specific doctrines and critical positions, but as a certain mindset, a propensity for reasoning that prevailed in Europe from the 17th century. The book examines the influence of rationalism on various forms of moral and intellectual development.
This edition is the second volume of the book, which describes the history of religious persecutions and their cessation with the development of rationalism, associated with a profound change in theological views. The author also explores the establishment of the secular character of politics, the development of the industrial spirit in Europe, and its conflicts with the church. In addition, the appendix contains materials from the court case regarding the publication of the book in Russia, in which its publisher was accused of not submitting the book for preliminary review by the spiritual censorship, resulting in some parts of the book being banned from printing. The first volume, dedicated to the study of the decline of the 'sense of wonder' among Europeans and the examination of the aesthetic, scientific, and moral development of rationalism, is released simultaneously with the second in our publishing house.
