Readers are offered a book by the English historian and public figure W.E.H. Lecky (1838–1903), dedicated to the study of the emergence and influence of rationalism. The author aims to present the history of the spirit of rationalism, which he understands not as specific doctrines and critical positions, but as a certain mindset, a propensity for reasoning that prevailed in Europe from the 17th century. The book examines the influence of rationalism on various forms of moral and intellectual development.
This edition is the first volume of the book, in which the author explores the history and reasons for the decline of the "sense of wonder" among Europeans with the development of rationalism. It discusses the disappearance under the influence of civilization of belief in magic, concerning both witchcraft and witches, as well as church miracles. In addition, the aesthetic, scientific, and moral development of rationalism, its impact on religion and art, are considered. The second volume of the book, which describes the cessation of religious persecutions, secularization, the industrial history of rationalism, and also contains materials of the court case regarding the publication of the book in Russia, is released simultaneously with the first in our publishing house.
