This book fully presents the text of the Great Penitential Canon, read in churches on the first and fifth weeks of Great Lent. The work of the great hymnographer of the 8th century, Saint Andrew of Crete, is difficult to perceive; it is full of references to sacred history, symbols, and complex turns of phrase.
To ensure the Great Canon reaches not only the hearts but also the minds of contemporary Orthodox Christians, we have prepared an edition in which the Church Slavonic text is provided with dictionary explanations, and the translation, made by the Russian spiritual writer N. Kedrov in 1914, is accompanied by meaningful comments (compiled by V. Luchaninov).
Recommended for publication by the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church.
