The book contains an unpublished doctoral thesis by the well-known Belarusian historian Viktor Nikolaevich Temushev (1975-2011), defended in 2002. It is distinguished by the use of cartography, which has become an important research tool, as well as the consideration of geopolitical and physiogeographical factors in analyzing the expansion of the boundaries of the Moscow Principality. It should be acknowledged that the large number of high-quality maps created by V. Temushev for his colleagues' work overshadowed the innovative methodology he used to address specific issues. This methodology is most fully embodied in the book on the history of the Gomel region and in the dissertation published by us, which represents a significant step in the development of historical geography. We also publish later articles by the author that complement and develop the conclusions of the dissertation.
